"A cackling laugh echoed down the dungeon's depths as the guard on the night shift arrived. He stopped dead in his tracks and sighed as he straightened his tunic.
"She's here again, is she? It's not Beggar's Eve already, is it?" Doogun asked the man on duty.
"Yes, she's here again and yes, it's already Beggar's Eve. The Holidays are coming sooner every year, seems like."
"It'll be solstice before you know it."
Again, the harsh laughter came at them from several angles set in the stone.
"I really wish she'd quit that," said Doogun. He knew in his heart it was going to be a long night.
Beggar's Eve always was. First, there had been the riot in the market, and he had even had trouble on his way to work. He had arrived with a perpetrator under his arm and a bloody shin. Oh, how he hated the holidays.
Beggar's Day came about in the Kingdom of Gallaway almost two hundred years before the present king. Old King Fred (and he was old) had been riding through the streets greeting his people after a hunting trip. Fred, in his later years, seemed to be able to hear only the brass blast of hunting horns. All subtle conversation, and some shouted was lost to him because of his near deafness. He waved as he rode and he realized that the people were trying to tell him something. They seemed most agitated and anxious to have him hear them. He leaned down at one point just as a blacksmith leaped up to tell him his saddle girth was undone. The resulting shift in balance made his saddle slide sideways and to everybody's dismay, King Fred, saddle and all, slipped from his horse and fell on the blacksmith. The blacksmith, who had been shoeing a horse, had stuck a sharp hoof-knife in his shirt pocket. When the King fell on him, that knife had sliced off the Royal Ear. The ear landed in the Blacksmith's hand and the King fell into the dust. Now, many a monarch would have had that Blacksmith roasted slowly over his own forge. But not Good King Fred. He took the whole incident as a lesson. He had the wandering ear placed in a jar of clear vinegar to preserve it. He went even further and established one day a year when anyone in the Kingdom could "Beg the King's Ear" and ask a favor of his monarch. All in all, the whole idea would have been a real vote getter had there been any votes to be gotten."
Brishee former slave, Cruith who, as far as we know is just a crazy old crone, the soldier Doogun, Elphane the Librarian and Larry, spoiled Prince of the Realm (currently reduced to a commoner for a year and a day) are set an almost impossible quest by Good King Willy. As if following a twenty-five year old trail in search of the Shield of Many Uses wasn't bad enough, Percy evil brother of the now dead Queen plots murder and mayhem on their trail as he seeks to steal the crown of Gallaway.
"Beggar's Day" is best described as more "Princess Bride" than "Lord of the Rings".
This first book in the series sets the comedic tone. The fantasy genre may seem an odd choice for MJ McGalliard to apply his twenty years of experience writing and performing stand-up comedy, but it works and works wonderfully. Populated with unforgettable characters, some of whom you want to take home with you and some you hope you've seen the last of, "Beggar's Day The Beggar Prince" makes fantasy human and funny.

Beggar Day The Beggar Prince eBook MJ McGalliard Judith Cullen Micki McIntyre

I fell in love with this book and these characters. They had all the qualities required for a classic fantasy adventure, but they were accessible as well. They felt like people I knew, not just static stereotypes.

The story itself was a journey which twisted and turned with delightful and surprising regularity. Whether it was the improbable relationship between a King and his chickens, or the wry commentary of the noble steed, BEGGAR'S DAY is delightfully original, delivering everything you might desire from such an adventure and much more.

Mr. McGalliard's writing is clever, filled with wit and good-humor. I look forward to the next installment of this series.

Beggar Day The Beggar Prince eBook MJ McGalliard Judith Cullen Micki McIntyre Reviews

I love this book! The story is a very exciting adventure and the characters are all interesting. I especially appreciate how the female characters are all strong, brave, and smart. There are some really frightening scenes that had me holding my breath, but there's a good dose of levity, too. I think "Beggar's Day" would make a great movie. MJ is a gifted writer with a wonderful imagination and I can't wait for the sequel to come out.
